The fuel crisis hasn’t been easy on commuters and motorists. Just last week, Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) President Mody Floranda told The Philippine Star that public utility vehicle drivers have reduced trips by around 20 percent due to rising fuel prices. As the government pushes carpooling as a remedy to limited transportation options, Grab launches Group Ride, a new feature that lets multiple passengers book a single trip to and from the same destination.

Group Ride builds on the common carpooling experience, which typically consists of one user booking multiple stops for a single trip, splitting the fare evenly among their friends, and then chasing them for payment afterward. While you can still book multiple stops the old way, the new feature makes carpooling easier by letting Grab’s own artificial intelligence (AI) system determine the most efficient route for the group and calculating each person’s fare based on the distance traveled, time taken on the route, and traffic conditions. With Group Ride already available in the Philippines, Grab says it will soon add a waiting room feature to the app, allowing all users in the group to see who’s ready and track the vehicle’s progress in real time.

According to Grab, Group Ride could also help users save up to 40 percent on travel fares.

“This is basically how to save money,” Grab Chief Product Officer Philipp Kandal told reporters during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 8. “As long as there’s a shared part of the route that multiple of you travel on, it will make the total drive cheaper for each person. Especially in the current situation, I think it’s more needed than ever that we can help you beat these rising living costs.”

An ‘Everyday Guide’

Along with Group Ride, Grab announced several other new features and products at GrabX, its annual product showcase. Held in Jakarta, Indonesia this year, GrabX presented new and upcoming user experiences geared towards making living in Southeast Asia easier and more affordable through AI.

“As a product builder, I believe AI should work the hardest for the people who need it most,” said Kandal during his presentation. “Whether you’re a consumer who just wants a chatbot to choose your lunch, a merchant who needs to monitor multiple shops remotely, or a driver getting hands-free voice advice, we want the Grab app to be the everyday guide that handles the manual tasks, so you can focus on your day.”

Serving over 900 cities across Southeast Asia, Grab is looking to roll out several new features throughout 2026. Among these is Cash Loan, which has been available for merchants and drivers in the Philippines since November 2025, and will also be made available to consumers in Thailand and Malaysia this year.

Grab is also launching its own AI assistant; a new tap-to-pay feature; GrabMaps, a navigation tool for consumers; GrabPay for Travel, a QR-enabled payment processing service; and Discover by Grab, an in-app social feed that allows users to share local food places and directly order from or book rides to them. Grab says these products are meant to serve as “everyday guides to local life, effortless travel, and business empowerment.”
