Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (Dulaang UP) closes November with a love letter to its founder and National Artist for Theater, Antonio “Tony” Mabesa, with Para kay Tony: Tungo sa Ginintuang Alaala. The twin bill stages two productions that mirror the company’s nearly five-decade-long commitment to championing classic Filipino plays and bold theatrical experimentation.
Running only until November 30 at the IBG-KAL Theater, UP Diliman, the tribute opens with a production of Kalahating Oras sa Isang Kumbento by National Artist for Theater Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero. Directed by UP Diliman Theatre Arts student Lloyd Sarmiento Uy, alongside director-mentor Erika Estacio, the play follows Yolanda, a girl expelled from a convent school, as she searches for comfort and companionship.
Rounding out the production is National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio’s May Katwiran ang Katwiran, under the direction of Theatre Arts student MJ Briones and director-mentor Charles Yee, which centers on the story of a haciendero and his servant as they journey across mountains teeming with threats to their survival.
Para Kay Tony is part of Dulaang UP’s 48th theatre season, Paano umuwi nang may pagpapasya? The season is part of a multi-year initiative leading up to Dulaang UP’s 50th anniversary.
